Mental Health Day UK

What is Mental Health Day UK?

World Mental Health Day is held on 10 October every year. It is a crucial day for raising awareness about mental health issues, promoting open chats, and supporting mental health education and resources. It’s also a day to let people know that it’s okay to ask for help, no matter what you’re going through.

Mental Health Day UK and Hospitality

The hospitality industry is the UK’s third biggest employer, accounting for 10% of all employment. A 2019 Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) study found that 80% of workers reported increased stress levels. Yet, only 10% had received training to support their health and well-being.

The hospitality industry was already facing a staffing crisis before COVID-19 hit. Brexit had prompted hundreds of thousands of foreign workers to leave the sector, and the pandemic only made the problem worse. As businesses reopened, they struggled to fill vacancies, putting even more pressure on staff.

Improving Mental Health Awareness in Hospitality

Given hospitality’s fast-paced, buzzing nature, extra measures will always be needed to ensure the safety and mental well-being of those in the industry. However, one distinct shift in the wake of these global events is that the industry increasingly recognises the importance of addressing mental health issues among its workforce.

Here are seven ways the industry is tackling mental health today:

Mental Health Awareness Programs:

Many businesses are implementing mental health awareness programs to educate employees and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues. These programs often include workshops, seminars, and training sessions.

Flexible Working Conditions

Some companies are exploring more flexible working conditions, which allow employees to have a better work-life balance. These might include flexible scheduling, remote work options, or compressed work weeks.

Training for Managers

It is crucial to train managers to recognise signs of mental health issues, foster open dialogue, and offer extra support. Managers play a key role in creating a positive and supportive work environment.

Wellness Programs:

Wellness programs that focus on physical and mental well-being should be added. This includes fitness classes, gym access, healthy eating programs, and mental health resources.

Crisis Response Plans

Clear crisis response plans should be in place to support employees during a traumatic event, and training on how to cope with such situations should be provided.
